- Mail server settings allow email programs connect to your Yahoo Mail account: once configured, you can send and receive messages inside that application, using your Yahoo email address. (You no longer need to be a "Yahoo Mail Plus" member to go the email program route.)
- Use the POP server settings to get messages from your Yahoo inbox only, without access the "live" email folders on the server (login to your account in a web browser to see them).

- The IMAP server settings makes your email program as a true "client", which uses the folders you have created in your Yahoo account, and keeps them in sync with your computer:

Outgoing Authentication Make sure that "My outgoing server requires authentication" setting is checked (the actual wording depends on the email program you are using - this is how Microsoft applications word it). - If your email program offers to automatically configure your account, double-check the program's documentation to see if it will use POP3 or IMAP - or setup manually from the start!
