- Type "sounds" in the start menu and click on "Change system sounds".
- To change all event sounds, pick another "Sound Scheme" from that dropdown.
- Any "Program Events" that shows a speaker icon currently has a sound associated with it: preview it by clicking on the "Test" button at the bottom.
- To change the selected event's sound, select another file from the current scheme in the "Sounds" dropdown menu, or click "Browse" and select another sound file: Windows 7 shows by default the content of the system sound folder, but you can pick any
WAVfile.
- To associate a new sound: select an event, click "Browse", and double-click a
WAVfile. - To remove a sound, like the page-loading noise Internet Explorer makes, select that event ("Start Navigation" in our case), and pick "None" in the Sounds dropdown (it's the first entry).
- To disable all Windows sounds, select "No Sounds" under "Sound Scheme". (See "Change volume / program sounds" for a Volume Mixer trick to temporarily turn off system sounds!)
- And uncheck "Play Windows Startup sound" if you want your PC to start in silence.
Tip: you can't change the Windows 7 startup sound without utilities to "hack" at the registry.
- To backup a custom sound scheme, click "Save As" at the top, and type a name for your scheme. Next time you test another scheme, you can easily restore yours in two clicks!
- Click "OK" to save and apply your changes, or "Cancel" to keep your current sounds.
Troubleshooting tip: if you can't hear event sounds (assuming speakers are turned on and volume turned up), type "volume" in the start menu and click "Adjust system volume". In the Volume Mixer, make sure that "System Sounds" is not turned all the way down / muted.
