- By default, Microsoft configures Windows 7 to automatically sync its date and time settings based on the region and time zone you pick during activation, and based on the global clock from the
time.windows.comservice. Both can be changed. - To change the time, click on the system clock and click "Change date and time settings":
- Click on the "Change date and time" button (may prompt you for the administrator's password).
- Click on the hours, minutes, or seconds in the text field, and use the arrow buttons (or keyboard arrow keys) to move forward / backward in time: (hit Tab to move from one to the next)
- To change the date, just click on another day inside the calendar. Click on the month and year to change month (underlined in screenshot below), or click then on the year to pick another year:
- Click OK when you are done.
- Click on the "Change time zone" button to do so: pick the closest region or city from the dropdown, and keep the "Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time" checked, if it is offered (not all states or regions follow that convention). Click OK to save the change.
- Windows has now been updated! Confirm with a glance at the system clock in the notification area.
Caveat: changing time forward and back can cause issues with third-party backup systems that use file timestamps to synchronize your file (especially problematic when you move back in time, edit files, and then change it forward). When sorting files by date, some may then show as having been created in the future! (Don't freak out, just keep that in mind :)
