- Type "password" in the start menu and click "Change your Windows password".
- In the Control Panel, click on the "Change your password" link at the top.
Tip: to change another user's password, click instead on "Manage another account", select the user on the next screen, and click "Change the password" - what follows is identical.
- If you just want to make your password blank (no password required to login), no need to go further: just click on the "Remove your password" link (visible in second position above). Enter your current password for confirmation and click "Remove Password". The Control Panel will now say "Create a password for your account", which is what you need to click to re-add that protection.
- Ensure that CapsLock is off, and type your current Windows password, for confirmation.
- Enter your case-sensitive new password in the next two fields.
- Optionally (strongly recommended), come up with a word or sentence as password hint: Windows 7 will use that information to help jug your memory if you forget your password.
Note: you can also create a password reset disk for backup / recovery purposes - inserting that CD or USB drive would let you access your PC and pick another password.
- Click on the "Change password" button at the bottom: the change takes effect immediately.
