- Hidden formatting marks let you see whitespace (spaces, tabs, line returns, paragraphs) and file structure (page / section breaks, hidden text, anchors), but won't appear in printed documents.
- Click on the "¶" pilcrow button (Ribbon Home tab) to manually show or hide formatting marks:
- You can toggle their visibility even faster by using the Ctrl+Shift+8 keyboard shortcut!
- You can tell Word 2010 to always show formatting some symbols by clicking File (top left) and choosing Options. Then, select the "Display" settings on the left:
- If "Show all formatting marks" is checked, none of them will appear when you click to show/hide them: to display some of them all the time, tick their individual checkbox and click OK to save.
- If you chose to selectively show (for example) paragraph marks, they will be visible at all times: once you on click the ¶ button, all other formatting symbols will show, but paragraph marks will remain on screen when you turn off the feature by clicking again on that same button.
