- Word 2010 doesn't embed fonts by default, to make documents smaller in size (avoiding font licensing issues at the same time). This isn't a problem if you don't use exotic font or distribute your documents to users on Mac OS X or Linux.
Tip: installing Office 2010 applications / Office 2011 on the Mac, or the free Microsoft Word Viewer, will automatically install a number of fonts for compatibility.
- To embed fonts in the current document, click on "File" (top left), and select "Options".
- Select "Save" on the left, and look at the last section on the right.
- Check "Embed fonts in the file".
- By checking "Embed only the characters used in the document (best for reducing file size)", Word 2010 will not embed any letters or symbols in the embedded fonts (as opposed to embedding the entire alphabet and supported special characters).
- "Do not embed common system fonts" is checked by default, and we recommend that you leave it so: anyone likely to open your document will have those fonts already installed.
Tip: to guarantee a similar experience across platforms, save your document as PDF. (Choose "*.pdf" under the "Save as type" dropdown in the Save As / Save dialog).
- Click "OK". Remember to do this whenever embedded fonts are needed.
