- By default, Word 2010 opens and saves files to the "My Documents" folder.
Tip: in Windows 7, the "Documents" directory under your profile is called a "library".
- To change either or both of these settings, click on "File" (top left), and choose "Options".
- Select "Save" on the left: your default folder is listed under "Save documents" (first section).
- Click "Browse" to select a new open / save directory, or type its path in the "Default file location" text field. (We recommend that you keep the default AutoRecover file location.)
- Click "OK" to apply your new setting: press Ctrl+O to open a new file: Word will automatically look into the folder you just entered! hit Ctrl+S to save a blank document, and that same folder is automatically loaded in the Save dialog (but you can still “Save As” into any other folder).
Tip: the "Server drafts location" path you may have seen listed below is only used if you work in a network environment with SharePoint (Word edits documents locally for efficiency).
