- To avoid send-receive errors when working on an airplane, or as a productivity tip, you can switch to offline mode in Outlook 2010 (which no longer puts Internet Explorer offline).
- Select the "Send / Receive" tab in the Ribbon, and click "Work Offline".
- Outlook's icon in the taskbar and system tray / notification area now shows a red "x" in overlay.
- While offline, no new messages will be downloaded or interrupt you; manually clicking "Send/Receive All Folders", however, (or pressing F9), will force Outlook to check for new emails / send those in your outbox. But it will remain offline after that.
Tip: Outlook 2010 can automatically send receive even when offline, but with a different interval than the default one. See "Send/Receive Settings" to customize this behavior.
- To go back online, simply click the "Work Offline" button once again.
