Things to know about read receipts:
1- Getting one means that someone opened your email, the intended recipient or not.
2- Not receiving one means nothing, one way or the other: the person may have opened your message, but manually refused to acknowledge the read receipt request, or set their email program never to send one. Or he/she may not have (yet) read your email.- Manually request a read receipt by checking "Request a read receipt" under "Options".
What is a "Delivery Receipt"? This option works internally / when the recipient is on a Microsoft Exchange mail server - and nothing will happen if this feature has been disabled.
- To always, and automatically request read receipts, click on "File" (top left) and choose "Options". Select "Mail" on the left and scroll down to "Tracking".
- Check the "Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message" checkbox.
- From there, also configure how Outlook handles "incoming" read receipts. ⇒ Select "Always send a read receipt" to auto-confirm them, without notification from Outlook.
⇒ Choose "Never send a read receipt" (our favorite!) to decide whether you want to acknowledge reception of the message by replying to it - or not (and you never get the confirmation dialog).
⇒ Pick "Ask each time whether to send a read receipt" to allow you to decide every time - this is the default setting.
- Click "OK" to save your new email tracking options and return to Outlook.
