- Launched in November 2011 with an October 2012 lineup refresh, Kindle Fire / HD marks Amazon's entrance in the multi-touch tablets market, since then topping their electronics bestsellers list.
- The Fire and Kindle Fire HD run a modified version of Google's Android mobile OS, which means plenty of existing apps ready to be downloaded, many of them free!
- You get an awesome tablet for that relatively low price because Amazon makes little to no money for each one sold: instead, they bank on your using their offerings to make a profit. It's seamless to buy and consume their content; with Amazon Prime (USD $79/year), you get free two-day shipping for physical items, but also lots of movies and TV shows for free, and many books that are either free or can be borrowed (one at a time) for free. This isn't an advertisement, we're just fan of the tablet and Prime bundle! Personal note on the screen: given its small size (7 inches), we didn't expect much for movies or TV shows, but it looks great - and the latest version with HD looks even sharper.
