- Emails sent from AOL Mail use by default a white background, with a 10 points Arial font, and black text (unless you changed the default font). Stationeries let you to change background color, text color and size, even use a background image, without changing any of your settings!
- Start by clicking "New" (near top left), to compose a new message. (If you see an "Enable rich text editor" notice, click on it to start using formatting in your emails.
Start typing your message, if only a sentence to preview each stationery's text size and color. - Click on the "Stationery" button (on the right of the formatting toolbar, looks like a stamp). The reason the tooltip reads "Add backgrounds for holidays and more" is because AOL regularly adds new backgrounds for special occasions - check them out regularly for additions!
Tip: for some reason, AOL doesn't show that option when you are using a shortcut to compose a new email. Just create new emails from your inbox to access stationeries.
- The "Stationery" panel opens on the right (where ads normally are), with "Featured" selected by default: click on the dropdown to view other background images and colors: "Animals", "Featured Artist", "Holidays", "Just For Fun", and "Occasions". Also notice the scrollbar - quite a few swatches might be hidden, depending on your screen resolution.
- Click as many previews as you want to apply them to your message (hovering mouse over shows their name). Once you are satisfied, resume writing your email: when you send it, background and colors will automatically be part of the message, visible to your recipients.
Note: the legitimate technique of linking images in your email from AOL's servers is also used by spammers, so pictures may be hidden by default from your recipients. Avoid stationeries for important emails (the message could accidentally be filtered as junk mail).
