- Click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, and click the "Mixer" link at the bottom. If you don't see that icon, type "sound volume" in the start menu and click "Adjust system volume".
- Besides sound card settings, four factors affect your PC's output sound in Windows 7:
- The leftmost slider controls the system volume, which overrides everything else: if you mute it, all sounds are disabled. That same slider appears when clicking the speaker icon (tips!)
Tip: by default, moving the system sound slider increases or decreases the volume of all other sounds, but you can change their individual volume after the fact.
- The seconds slider controls the volume of "system sounds": click the mute button below that slider to mute all system sounds, but leave all others unaffected.
- The application volume control at the system level lets you control the sound output of individual programs: notice the horizontal scrollbar when the Volume Mixer window is not wide enough. Above, iTunes plays at system volume, and Windows Media Player is muted.
- The application sound level itself (like volume slider in iTunes or Windows Media Player) is independent from system volume, and can be muted without showing it in the Volume Mixer.
- The physical volume button if you have external speakers plugged in: though obvious, it is surprisingly often forgotten in troubleshooting sound issues on your PC!
